Jonathan Nez Defends Head Start Amid Proposed Cuts

FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Today, reports have surfaced that President Donald Trump’s administration is planning to overhaul Head Start, including gutting its quality standards.

Head Start provides early childhood education, health, nutrition, and family support to over 700,000 children each year. Since 1965, Head Start has supported nearly 40 million children and families, making it a cornerstone of early education and childhood development in America.

The reported plans to cut Head Start are reckless and reflect a broader pattern of this administration’s attempts to undermine educational opportunities.

“Growing up on the Navajo Nation, Head Start gave me access to early education that my family otherwise could not afford. As a low-income family, this program provided opportunities that shaped my future. Later, as a leader of the Navajo Nation, I fought to protect Head Start funding and ensure children and families had access to these critical resources,” said Nez. “Gutting Head Start would harm thousands of children and make it even harder for low-income families to access quality education. Education should not be a partisan issue. Every child deserves the same opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed that I was fortunate to receive.”

Head Start is especially important for rural communities and families with limited resources, providing children with access to quality early education and support. The Arizona Department of Education estimates that approximately 15,000 children across Arizona benefit from Head Start services.

Throughout the entirety of this administration’s careless budget cuts, Eli Crane has not fought for AZ-02’s funding rights, instead allowing tax cuts for billionaires to be prioritized over education for toddlers. He has no regard for AZ-02’s youth or future generations.

During his time as Vice President and President of the Navajo Nation, Nez advocated for strong Head Start funding, including fighting proposed budget cuts in 2017 and calling for the Navajo Nation to receive its fair share of federal support.

In Tribal communities especially, Head Start serves as a critical foundation for early childhood education, providing opportunities for children and families where access to quality developmental programs is often limited.

If Head Start funding were shifted to state departments, as outlined in today’s reports, the program’s future would be severely jeopardized. States would be forced to balance Head Start funding against competing priorities across all other public services, creating an unrealistic burden that could leave thousands of families without access to critical early childhood education and support.

Education should not be a partisan issue. Every child deserves access to quality education, health, and nutrition. Head Start is a great equalizer, giving low-income children the support they need to thrive.

Threatening to gut Head Start shows this administration’s disregard for our children’s future, prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires instead of investments in America’s youngest learners.
